U-Haul is a privately owned company under the parent corporation AMERCO, which also manages real estate and insurance businesses. Founded by Leonard Shoen in his family’s garage, the company expanded rapidly by adopting a franchising model centered on gas station locations. The Shoen family maintains a 55% stake in the publicly traded firm. Due to their widespread presence on roads, U-Haul has become synonymous with moving equipment. The company’s leadership experienced family disputes, leading to court battles resolved in favor of Leonard Shoen. After a tragic accident in 1999 and a bankruptcy filing in 2003, U-Haul rebounded in 2004 without major impact.
The fleet includes various trucks, trailers, and equipment, primarily gas-powered. Notably, some models like the 5.2-meter trucks were diesel but have since been replaced. Heavy-duty trucks and pickup vans are mostly GMC or Ford, with custom-made truck boxes of different sizes. Vehicles range from 3.0 meters up to 7.9 meters, including trailers like Tow Doly and Auto Transport, as well as trucks with lower decks and special storage spaces called "Mom’s Attic." The trucks feature educational graphics of Canadian regions.
