Early Life, Career, and Achievements
Born in November 1966 in Sydney, Australia, Liane Moriarty is the eldest of six siblings. Her childhood was marked by a passion for literature and writing, supported by her father, Bernie Moriarty. He even commissioned her to write for him, encouraging her creative pursuits.
Her career began with writing her first trilogy, titled The Mystery of Dead Man’s Island, which she completed with just $1 from her father as an advance. After leaving school, she worked in advertising and legal publishing marketing. She then founded her own agency, The Little ad Agency, which was short-lived. Later, she became a freelance copywriter, often stopping short of finishing her novels, believing that ordinary people rarely get published.
Her breakthrough came when her younger sister Jaclyn Moriarty’s debut, Feeling Sorry for Celia, was published. Motivated by sibling rivalry, Moriarty completed her first novel, which faced rejection from several publishers. She then pursued a master's degree at Macquarie University. During her studies, she finished her second novel, Three Wishes, published in 2004 by Harper Perennial. This novel's success launched her international literary career.
Today, Moriarty has authored seven novels, three of which appeared on The New York Times Bestseller list, with two reaching number one. Her storytelling often involves secrets and twists centered on suburban women's lives, fitting into the chick-lit genre. Her books vividly portray complex characters, intertwined secrets, and unexpected plot turns, captivating a vast readership. Growing up with a love for reading has shaped her into a prolific and acclaimed novelist.
