DIY Guide to Crafting a Durable Shower Base with Proper Layers

A concrete shower base, often called a mud shower pan, is built manually to form the foundation of a shower. This base includes a drain embedded in the floor, typically sloped toward the drain for effective water removal and finished with tiles. The goal of a well-made shower pan is to ensure a sturdy, stable surface that efficiently channels water into the drain system.

While most shower water flows directly to the drain, some systems allow water to flow back into the piping. The main purpose of a shower pan is to direct water back into the drainage channel, aided by a waterproof membrane that is inclined toward the drain, featuring weep holes for water seepage into the sewage system.

Creating a reliable shower pan involves employing a waterproof barrier wrapped around the drain that guides water into the sewer system. Without proper waterproofing or a liner, water can leak through the base into adjoining walls and floors. Conventional concrete pans are porous and can allow water to pass without the protection of a liner.

A layered process, building a mortar shower pan involves several steps around the drain installation:

Frame the shower walls and curb, then install wall blocking to create the base structure.

Assemble the shower drain system.

Line the base with tar paper for moisture protection.

Lay down the initial mortar layer, followed by installing a waterproof liner over it.

Finish with tiling over the mortar surface for a polished look.
