The journey began in 1972 with the debut of the E12 model, marking the first generation of the BMW 5 Series. Initially facing challenges with U.S. regulations, it underwent modifications to comply. The second generation, launched as E28 in 1981, introduced features like power windows, sunroof, fog lights, and cruise control, with optional manual or automatic transmissions. 1983 saw the debut of the diesel engine in this series.
