Heel discomfort is a common issue affecting many adults. It typically manifests as pain beneath the heel bone, known medically as plantar fasciitis. This area, just below the Achilles tendon that connects to the heel bone, can become painful due to various factors.
While often not serious, persistent heel pain can become chronic and interfere with daily activities. The heel bone (calcaneus) is the largest in the foot, providing essential support for body weight. Its role in absorbing impact during walking or running makes it susceptible to damage.
Activities like running put extra pressure on the heel, potentially causing pain over time. Heel pain often arises from mechanical issues but can also result from conditions like arthritis or injury.
Symptoms may include gradual onset of pain without injury and discomfort after periods of rest, especially upon waking or after long periods of inactivity.
