Founded in 1994 under the name General Wireless by Malcolm Lorang and Roger D. Linguist, Metro by T-Mobile traces its roots to industry veterans from PageMart Wireless. The company functions as a prepaid wireless provider in the United States and operates under the umbrella of T-Mobile US, Inc.

It delivers nationwide voice, text, and data services utilizing networks such as 4G LTE, HSPA, GSM, and HSPA+. The brand also expanded its device lineup with a variety of new phones following its growth into a major telecommunications provider.

Initially employing CDMA technology, Metro by T-Mobile operated as the sixth-largest wireless network in the US. However, on June 21, 2015, this CDMA infrastructure was retired, and LTE networks from T-Mobile US were integrated alongside new device offerings.

The rollout of LTE by Metro faced mixed reviews; despite being a 4G-based network, some experts noted that actual speeds were comparable or inferior to earlier 3G networks.
