How Zero Turn Mowers Work
Modern zero turn mowers typically have four wheels—two smaller swiveling front wheels and two larger rear drive wheels. These rear wheels operate independently, allowing the mower to pivot in tight circles, perform Z-turns, and navigate around tight corners. When one wheel remains stationary, the mower can spin around it, providing exceptional agility. The forward and reverse motions are controlled via two throttles, not traditional steering mechanisms.

Two small front wheels swivel freely, while two large rear wheels power the mower and can independently rotate based on driver input. This setup allows for precise turning, including tight curves and pivoting in place. Forward, backward, and zero-radius turns are achieved by varying the speed and direction of each wheel. The operation involves two levers positioned on either side of the operator, which control the speed and direction of the wheels. Pushing both levers forward moves the mower forward; pulling back reverses it, and pushing one lever forward while pulling the other back enables zero-radius turning.
