The Evolution and Legacy of Nordstrom Footwear

With over a century of history, Nordstrom has cemented its position as a leading name in the fashion world. Remained a family-owned business, it rapidly grew into a global retail giant.

Founded by John W. Nordstrom and Carl F. Wallin, the original store was a small basement operation. This inspiring journey is a testament to perseverance and innovation.

Founding Story
John W. Nordstrom, at just 16, left home to seek work across the US, from California to Washington. His adventurous spirit took him to Alaska, where he struck gold, earning $13,000 after a dispute over ownership. He then moved to Seattle to join Carl F. Wallin, who owned a shoe repair shop. Recognizing a promising opportunity, they partnered to launch a shoe store, emphasizing quality and excellent service—principles still core to Nordstrom today.

Family Heritage
In 1928, the business was transferred to John’s children. By 1929, Carl sold his stake back to the family, and the company’s leadership remained within the Nordstrom lineage, passing at age 65 from one generation to the next. Each generation contributed to the company's growth. The second expanded into women's fashion through collaborations with Best Apparel, while the third took Nordstrom international, broadening into men’s and children’s apparel and accessories. Going public in 1971, Nordstrom’s sales surpassed $100 million within two years, becoming the West Coast’s top fashion retailer. The company rebranded as Nordstrom, Inc. in 1973.

Today, the fourth generation manages the brand, with three presidents and several family members on the board. In 1998, they launched their online platform, nordstrom.com, which now features advanced shopping tools and international shipping options.

Modern Developments
Nordstrom continues to honor its founder’s legacy by collaborating with numerous brands. Their core focus remains on footwear, along with clothing and accessories for all ages. Known for quality and affordability, Nordstrom is famous for discounts and clearance sales, maintaining its reputation as a leading fashion retailer worldwide.
