The Mazda CX-7 originated as the production model of the MX-Crosspost concept. It marked Mazda’s first foray into mid-size SUVs after the Navajo. Built on Ford’s global C1 platform, it shared components with the Mazda MPV minivan and Mazda5 models. Responding to the rising popularity of crossovers, Mazda launched the three-row CX-8 in mid-2017, debuting in Japan.
