The Social Security Administration (SSA) assigns a unique nine-digit number to each individual, initially for Social Security tracking. Today, this number, known as the SSN, is essential for taxation and serves as a primary form of identity verification. There are three types of Social Security cards issued, all displaying the cardholder’s name and SSN. These cards are available for U.S. citizens and lawful residents.
If your original card is lost or stolen, you can request a replacement at no cost through the SSA. The process can be completed online by providing your mailing address and driver’s license details.
Having an active my Social Security account simplifies the replacement process. Creating an account is easy—just input your personal details, then set a username and password for secure access. If you prefer in-person service, visit your local SSA office with the necessary documentation to apply for a new card. You can request up to three replacements annually and ten in your lifetime.
Provide original or certified copies of current documents issued by the relevant authority.
